Hello Jim,

I have never tried the Sierra Wireless Raven XE so it is difficult to give specific advice for this router. I am currently in contact with a reseller of Diafaan SMS Server to see if it is possible to use the router with Diafaan SMS Server over an IP connection but we have not yet established if this is feasible.

It might be possible to improve the reliability of the passthru mode. You can enable the "RebootBeforeInitialization" option in the advanced settings of the GSM Modem Gateway properties. Another option that might help is the "RebootDaily" option to restart the modem once a day. These options will probably work if the problem with the modem hangs is caused by the GSM module, if the problem is caused by ALEOS it will probably not help.

It is possible to use the at*smsm2m="number text" command with the Scripting Gateway but this requires a custom script that opens a serial port and sends the AT command. According to the documentation the at*smsm2m command is very limited though, it only supports basic SMS messages up to 140 characters.

Regards, Henk

We purchased a Sierra Wireless Raven XE for use with our Diafaan gateway. This unit is overkill for our needs but unfortunately choice is limited in Canada. When I first configured the unit, I learned that the operating environment for the Raven XE is ALEOS and it expects a "special" command to send SMS messages, at*smsm2m="6042555555 test".

Since I wanted to use the basic GSM-AT commands (AT+CMGS) I had to put the modem in PASSTHRU mode so that we use the radio only and bypass ALEOS. However, we had some issues with periodic modem "hangs" and Sierra Wireless is saying that the modem was never meant to be in PASSTHRU mode full time. Is there a way to get Diafaan to use these "special" commands so that we can leave the modem in native mode?

Jim
