The email handling in Diafaan SMS Server is rather strict, if it gets an email with missing, incomplete or confusing headers it presumes that the messages contains basic 7-bit ASCII characters. Other email programs may make other presumptions and recognize that there are Scandinavian characters present but Diafaan SMS Server does not do that.
Unfortunately it is not possible to set a default character set for email messages in Diafaan SMS Server.

Have to add that if I send a message using my mail program (Agent) the characters are showing up correct in "diafaan".

Sorry for making noise 🙂
Looks like the probem is not in the SMS server.
Mail are coming from a program called PDW which is a decoder for a scanner.
The PDW program sends out email without "Charset" header an other important headers.
Therefore the SMS server does not know what to do with this national characters (i think)
The strange thing is that when I get these mails to my HTC mobilephone, the characters show up correct.
Are there some way to tell the SMS server to handle all mail as Danish characters. (if yes, I can't find it)

This configuration should be able to send the Danish characters unaltered. It is possible that there is an error in the configuration or a problem with the mail from the POP box. Is it possible to send me your configuration file and the log entry of one of the messages with question marks?
You can save the configuration file with menu options "File-Export-Configuration". The log entry can be found in the Send Log, right-click on a log entry with the character problem and select "Export to file" to save the log entry to a file. The logs can be sent to email address dms@diafaan.com.

I am using a POP server to poll for mail. The modem I use is a SonyEricsson mobilephone.

Can you tell more about your configuration? Do you use a POP box or the SMTP server in Diafaan SMS Server to collect the email messages. And do you use a GSM modem, Clickatell or an SMPP account to send the SMS messages?
When you use a GSM modem to send the messages, normally all international characters are available for the message but with an SMPP server it is sometimes necessary to set the character set that the SMPP server expects.
