Gemalto Cinterion EHS6T LAN modem

Gemalto is a digital security company and a manufacturer of wireless modems. The wireless module division was originally part of Siemens, spun off to Cinterion and then taken over by Gemalto.

We tested the Gemalto Cinterion EHS6T LAN model, an industrial 3G modem with both a serial port and a LAN connection.

Installation

Most Gemalto/Cinterion/Siemens modems use an RJ12 plug for the power connection, this is not very standard so make sure to order the correct power supply with the modem. After connecting the power supply, the antenna, inserting the SIM card and connecting the serial port to the computer, the modem was recognized by Diafaan SMS Server immediately.

After changing the default static IP number to an IP number suitable for our network in the web interface of the modem, Diafaan SMS Server was also able use port 1234 of the LAN connection of the EHS6T.

Daily operation

We found no major problems with the modem during our tests but we ran into a minor problem with with the extremely limited SMS memory on the modem. The modem can only store up to 4 messages and also up to 4 status reports. In itself this is no big problem but our SMS service provider Vodafone sends a flash SMS message every time the message buffer of the modem is full, adding to the problem and filling up the inbox with service messages.

We could not find a modem setting that prevented the service messages but it was possible to filter out the service messages by setting the 'NumberWhiteList' property in the advanced settings of the GSM Modem Gateway to '+*' (allow only messages from a number that starts with a plus character). This filters out the service messages from the provider but also messages with alphanumeric sender IDs or short codes from other sources.

Conclusion

The Gemalto Cinterion EHS6T is an excellent modem for use with Diafaan SMS Server but the issue with the limited SMS storage can make it less suitable for applications where receiving service messages from the mobile operator is important. Of course, not all mobile operators send a flash service message when the SMS memory of the modem is full and when that is the case this issue will not show up at all.
